Dental crowns are intended to cover up the damaged parts of your teeth and improve your smile. When you have a missing or loose crown, the sensitive parts of your teeth are exposed to bacteria and can lead to infections or serious oral health problems. How you handle a loose crown before you come in for treatment is important. To help you understand what you need to do, here are the steps you should take.

What To Do

If you notice that the dental crown is loose, firmly grip it between your fingers and try to remove it gently on your own. This will help prevent the accidental ingestion of the dental crown. In most cases, removing loose dental crowns on your own is better for your overall health and teeth. If you remove the dental crown and it falls on its own, inspect the inner surface for signs of dislodged teeth as well. If the loose crown came off easily and cleanly, it will be easier to reattach. Once the loose crown is out, brush it gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush. You can also use a toothpick to remove any cement or debris. If there is nothing obstructing the loose crown, it will be easier to get it back into your mouth. If there is any kind of bleeding, try stopping it to avoid further damage. After that, reach out to our offices as soon as you can for immediate treatment. One common mistake that people make when having a loose crown is continuing to use it. This is risky and could worsen the situation. You could also accidentally ingest the crown, which can be potentially catastrophic. Contact our offices for more information on how to handle a loose crown.
