Why You Need to Upgrade Dentures Every Couple Years

When you first got your dentures, you may not have liked wearing them. They likely felt foreign to you, and you probably had to deal with sore gum tissue for at least the first several weeks. However, as time passed, you probably became quite accustomed to them. Now they may even feel like a natural extension of your body.
Having said this, you may not want to upgrade your dentures. You may be comfortable and happy with the ones you have. However, you do need to upgrade your dentures at least every few years. Here are a few reasons to do so.
Wear and Tear Happens Over Time As with anything used to grind and mash, dentures will begin to show wear over time. Every day, you use them to bite, tear, crush, and grind your food. It is only natural to expect that all this activity will eventually start to take a toll on your dentures.
As they start to wear down, they will lose their effectiveness. What's more, you may find that you are having to position your mouth slightly differently to keep chewing. Because of the natural wear and tear, you need to replace your dentures at least every few years.
Your Mouth Changes Shape
Your dentures are not the only things that change over time. The shape of your mouth—specifically, the shape of your gums and the underlying jawbone.
Currently, your dentures probably fit your mouth like a glove. This is because they were designed to fit the unique contours of your mouth. However, as the shape of your mouth changes, you will find that the dentures don't quite fit the way they always did.
Because ill-fitting dentures can lead to other problems, you have to take care to get them replaced on a regular basis. Doing so will help keep your mouth—and your dentures—in great shape.
