Advanced technology makes appointments easier and more efficient. We can more accurately diagnose issues and provide accurate treatment. We use the latest dental technologies in our office, including digital X-rays.

How Digital X-Rays Work

Digital X-rays work fairly similarly to traditional X-rays. The biggest difference is in the technology they use. Where traditional X-rays involve the use of a film strip that you bite down on to take X-rays, digital X-rays use an electronic sensor. Digital X-rays do not need to be developed either. Instead, the images are displayed on a monitor. They take only a few seconds to appear.

Diagnosing Issues

Digital X-rays are essential for diagnosing numerous oral health issues that may otherwise go undetected with just a visual examination. X-rays can show many different issues, including damage to the roots of your teeth that are not visible in the crowns, bone loss in the jaw, gum disease, cysts, abscesses, impacted teeth, tumors, and hidden areas of decay.

Determining the Need for Bone Grafting

Digital X-rays can be very helpful in determining your candidacy for dental implants, including single implants as well as partial and complete fixed dentures. With these images, we can see how much bone mass has been lost in your jaw, which enables us to see if the bone is strong enough to support the implant posts. If you have lost a larger amount of bone mass, we can determine if a bone graft might be necessary to increase the success of your treatment.

In addition to seeing the severity of the bone loss in your jaw, digital X-rays can also help us to see if you might benefit from an alternative type of dental implant treatment. For instance, if you are missing all of the teeth in your upper arch, digital X-rays can help us to figure out if you are a candidate for the All-on-4 treatment concept. For those missing all of the teeth in their lower jaw, digital X-rays can show if a treatment like removable overdentures might be a possibility. With both of these types of solutions, you are still able to receive dental implants without first having to have a bone graft first.

Optimal Dental Implant Placement

In addition to seeing if you are a candidate for dental implants, digital X-rays can also help us to determine optimal implant placement. By planning out where to place your dental implants, we can help increase the chances that your dental implant treatment is a success.

How Safe are Digital X-Rays?

Patients are often understandably concerned about radiation exposure when it comes to getting X-rays. Digital X-rays are very safe. They produce far less radiation than traditional X-rays. Even so, we take the necessary safety precautions to ensure that your exposure is minimized. This includes taking X-rays only as deemed necessary and placing a lead vest over your body before taking the images.

Digital X-rays allow us to provide you with the dental care you deserve, and help you to get the best possible treatments for your oral health issues. For more information, contact Dallas Prosthodontics at (972) 503-7200 today.
