PrP is a liquid that we make using your blood. We take this before your dental procedure. This blood is then placed into a centrifuge where it is broken into individual components, the plasma, red blood cells, and white blood cells combined with platelets. This layer of platelets and white blood cells is referred to as the buffy, and this is what we are after. This contains the factors that we can isolate to promote healing and growth in the area where your implant was installed. This liquid is then placed directly on the surgical site. PrP helps your gums and bone to heal more quickly and to regenerate more consistently. What is Platelet Rich Fibrin?In many ways, this is very similar to PrP. Platelet Rich Fibrin, or PrF, is made in the same way as its liquid counterpart but is a gel membrane instead. This is used in much the same way as PrP, but this is used when there is not sufficient gum tissue to heal correctly. PrP is put in the area, and then the gums are closed to promote healing. If there is an empty socket from a tooth extraction or a larger implant, we can use it as a synthetic barrier to cover the gap in a similar way to graft. Are They Useful?PrP and PrF are both very effective in enhancing the healing process. While they are relatively new prospects, we have been using them for quite a while with our patients and have achieved unbelievable effects. This same concept has been used in other surgeries for even longer. It has only recently been introduced dentistry and has shown extremely beneficial. This is a definite shortcut in the healing process, and it does so completely naturally.
