The Benefits of Ceramic CrownsYour teeth perform many important functions. They allow you to chew your food, be understood when you speak, give you a beautiful smile and help your jawbone stay healthy and strong. When a tooth becomes damaged or weakened by a root canal, preserving it becomes critical. Dallas Prosthodontics offers ceramic crowns to provide you with the best results possible. What is a Crown?A crown is a dental restoration that “caps” the entire visible portion of a damaged or weak tooth and provides strength. A crown will help your tooth stay in its socket which will preserve its function and maintain your jawbone. Crowns serve a number of purposes:
Crowns & BridgeworkCrowns can be made from a variety of different materials. One of the most popular options is ceramic, which offers numerous benefits such as natural appearance, biocompatibility and no allergic reactions. Natural AppearanceAesthetics is one of the biggest benefits with ceramic crowns. Gold and metal crowns stand out and everyone will notice them. Ceramic crowns can be made to perfectly match the color of your natural teeth. But more than that they are designed to imitate the shine of real enamel. Unlike porcelain fused to metal (PFM), which have a thin metal coping that could influence the light reflection and appear dull, ceramic crowns look completely natural and are metal free. No Allergic ReactionsFinally, ceramic crowns are ideal for just about everyone. While not all that common, metal and PFM crowns can cause an allergic reaction. This is due to certain compounds found in the metal alloys. Symptoms of an allergic reaction are similar to gingivitis, including swollen, red and irritated gums right around the area where the crown comes into contact with the tissue. The only difference is that the symptoms are not present anywhere else on your gums and no amount of good oral hygiene gets rid of them. You may even notice a burning or itching sensation and because the crown is bonded permanently to your tooth, there is no relief. With ceramic crowns this is not a problem. If you have a metal allergy the ceramic crowns will be your best option. Getting Your Ceramic CrownGetting your ceramic crown is a simple process that takes only a couple of visits. During the first visit, we prepare your tooth by trimming or shaving the tooth down to make room for the new restoration. We will administer a local anesthetic to help manage any discomfort. After the tooth is trimmed we will take impressions and use a guide to match the color of your teeth. We send the impression and color information to a lab to create your custom crown. It can take up to two weeks to create your crown, but we will provide you with a temporary to help protect the tooth. When the crown is completed, we will schedule you for another appointment to check the fit and cement it in place. Ceramic crowns not only protect your weakened or damaged teeth, but they also blend in perfectly with the rest of your teeth, restoring your beautiful smile. |
