Things to Avoid So You Won't Dislodge an Implant After Placement
Posted on 3/30/2020 by Dr. Castellon
One of the main things to avoid after getting a dental implant placed in your mouth is to dislodge it. There are a few of these things that you have little control over. For example, even though it can appear that there's enough bone to support an implant, there may not be. It's also possible to have an allergic reaction to the metal used in the implant, causing your own body to dislodge it. What happens more often, though, is that patients fail to follow the instructions they're given and do something that causes the implant to get moved out of place. Eating the Wrong Foods One of the most common reasons an implant gets dislodged is due to eating the wrong foods. You want to eat only soft foods during your recovery time. Implants can get stuck with apples and be pulled out of position. Foods such as popcorn or small nuts can get stuck between the implant and the rest of your teeth, causing the implant to be pushed slightly to one side. Hard candy, gum, and anything else that's very hard or sticky can dislodge the implant. Being Active Right Away Your mouth needs time to heal and properly fuse around the implant post. If you play sports or do other strenuous activities right away, you may slow the healing process. It's also possible that you will be hit in the mouth with a ball or by another player, causing the implant to become dislodged. Even activities or hobbies that may seem completely safe should be avoided for a short time to make certain everything heals as it should. If you have any questions about what you should or should not do while recovering from implant surgery, give us a call. Also call us right away if you suspect your implant has been dislodged....
