New Technology for Dental Dentures

New Technology for Dentures at Dallas ProsthodonticsDentures have been used for hundreds of years to replace missing teeth. The dentures of today, however, are vastly different from those first years. In fact, today’s dentures are even vastly different than those offered just a couple of decades ago. Technological developments have made way for more comfortable, more natural looking dentures. At Dallas Prosthodontics, we take advantage of these new technologies, which allow us to provide you with the best dentures possible.

What are Dentures?

Dentures are a method of replacing missing teeth. They are available in partial dentures (meant to replace sections of missing teeth) and full dentures (which replace an entire arch). They consist of false teeth, which are set into a colored gum base. Your gums support your dentures (partials have metal clasps for additional support). They are removable and are meant to be taken out every night for thorough cleaning.

Digital Scanning

In the past, the denture process started with molds of your mouth, which were taken with the use of a special dental putty. These molds were then sent to a lab, where they were created using these molds. Today, impression putty is a thing of the past. We use digital scanning. An intraoral scanner is used to take a 3-dimensional image, which is projected onto a computer screen.

Virtual Design

With the 3-dimensional image on the computer, specialized virtual design software then allows for the designing of your dentures. The image provides exact 1:1 measurements, allowing us to customize a denture specifically for your mouth. We can view the tooth set up and make all changes without you needing to come back into the office. We can work with the lab over the computer (rather than having to send information back and forth through the mail). Because of the exact measurements provided, the try-in phase needed with the old procedures is unnecessary.

Milling Your Dentures

Once we have completed the design stage of your dentures, it is time to move on to creating them. Instead of pouring casts, computer-aided manufacturing allows for your dentures to be milled in a special machine. The materials, and the technology, used for milling your new dentures are strong. The acrylic resin for the base is much less likely to distort or shrink during milling than the materials used in the past during the traditional curing process. The teeth are made from a preshrunk material. This helps to ensure a much better fit, with a reduced risk needing adjustments.

Immediate Dentures

The technology used to design and create dentures has allowed for the creation of immediate dentures. Immediate dentures are made before your tooth extraction appointment, as opposed to after. Before your extraction appointment, the intraoral scanner is used to create your 3-dimensional image. We can then design a denture around the teeth that have yet to be pulled. Your dentures are ready and waiting for you on the day you come in for your extraction.

Digital Files

Technology also allows for us to create digital files. All of your information is stored in a computer. Should you ever lose or damage your dentures, a new set can be easily fabricated without the need to go through the entire process all over again.

New technology has made major improvements on dentures. If you are missing teeth, contact Dallas Prosthodontics today at (972) 503-7200 to find out if dentures are right for you.
