Dentures have long been the go-to solution for replacing missing teeth. They are still a common solution even today. While dentures have undergone numerous developments in recent years to improve their appearance, they are still not a favorite solution at Dallas Prosthodontics, we can provide denture wearers with an alternative treatment known as a fixed overdenture.
The Downsides to Dentures
Dentures are still a common treatment for replacing a full arch of missing teeth. They have undergone several significant developments in recent years, which has made them look much more realistic. However, despite these developments, dentures do still have some major disadvantages, including
•
Slipping out of place or even falling out, which can lead to embarrassing situations.
•
Putting pressure on your gums, which can cause discomfort.
•
Rubbing your gums and causing denture sores.
•
Requiring additional care every night, which can become tedious.
•
Needing replacement every few years due to a loss of bone mass and changes in the shape of your jaw.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants provide a modern treatment for tooth loss. This treatment, otherwise known as teeth in a day, uses small titanium posts, which are surgically placed into your jawbone. The posts are then used to support dental restorations or replacement teeth. As you heal from the surgical procedure, your bone gradually fuses to the posts, a process that stabilizes them within your jaw. Implants are a versatile treatment that can be used in some different situations, whether you are missing a single tooth or an entire arch.
Fixed Overdentures
Fixed overdentures, or implant supported dentures, are a treatment designed to replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Typically, this treatment involves the use of 6 to 8 implant posts to provide support for your dental restorations, which are secured into place on the posts with small screws. If you have been wearing dentures for a while, however, you may not have sufficient bone mass in your jaw to support these posts. The failure of even one post can fail the entire restoration.
If you do not have enough bone mass, you may be a candidate for the All-on-4® Treatment Concept. This treatment, otherwise known as teeth in a day, uses only four implant posts to provide support for your new teeth. The posts are placed in such a way as to take full advantage of your existing natural bone mass, increasing the success of your bone fusing to them. With this treatment, denture wearers can get dental implants without the need for undergoing a bone graft surgery first.
Getting Your New Teeth
The process for getting your fixed overdentures involves surgery. After receiving a local anesthetic and sedation, small incisions are made in your gums to expose the bone underneath. Next, holes are drilled into your jawbone by your treatment plan. The implant posts are then placed immediately inside. Finally, the gums are sutured closed, and temporary teeth are placed. Once you have fully healed from surgery, your temporary teeth are removed, and abutments are placed. An impression of your mouth is taken and then used to fabricate your final restorations.
Benefits of a Fixed Overdenture
There are many benefits to a fixed overdenture.
•
Your new teeth are fixed into place with small screws and do not need to be removed. They can be brushed and flossed just like real teeth, relieving you from the tedium of caring for dentures.
•
Implant posts are stable and secure. Your teeth will not slip around or fall out of place.
•
Your new teeth are far more comfortable. Your teeth are supported by the implant posts rather than your gums.
•
Even with only four implant posts, a fixed overdenture can help to stop and prevent bone loss in your jaw. Overdentures are made to be a long-term, even permanent solution to tooth loss. You do not need to worry about your jawbone changing shape or requiring new restorations every few years.
•
Requiring 4 implant posts rather than 6 to 8 means less surgery and a shorter recovery. It also makes treatment with implants more affordable.
